Accessibility

Built so thateveryone can findhelp quickly

We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA on this website. Accessibility is not a one-time fix for us: if something gets in your way, tell us and we will work on it.

What we do

Features builtinto every page

  • 01

    Keyboard and screen reader use

Every link, button, and form field can be reached with a keyboard, in a predictable order. Focus is shown with a visible outline, menus are labelled, and headings follow the correct order from h1 down.

  • 02

    Plain language first

Pages avoid legal jargon, use short sentences, and define the words that matter. Where a legal word is unavoidable, we explain what it usually means in everyday language.

  • 03

    Contrast and text size

Text is at least 17 pixels on most screens, line spacing is generous, and body text meets WCAG 2.1 AA contrast against its background. Text stays readable when you zoom to 200% or increase your default font size.

  • 04

    Meaning without colour

Colour is never the only way we communicate something. Form errors show text and a role=alert message, categories carry labels, and required fields say so in words.

  • 05

    Alt text and captions

Photographs and illustrations have descriptions for people using a screen reader. The illustrated map is marked as decorative guidance only, and its description says so.

  • 06

Motion that can be turned down

Animations are gentle and switch off automatically when your device is set to reduce motion. Nothing important only appears through movement.

  • 07

    Mobile and low data

The layout works from small phones to large screens, tap targets are at least 44 pixels tall, and pages are kept light so they load on a slower connection.

  • 08

Support in more than one format

If a page is hard for you to read, ask. We can send information by email, read it to you over the phone, print it and leave it for you at the office, or meet in person to go through it together.

Where we may fall short

Some content comes from other organizations’ websites, which we do not control and which may not meet the same standard. Older PDF guides can also be harder to read than a web page. If a document you need is difficult, ask us and we will explain it or provide it another way.
